Frequency Asked Questions

What is toki pona about?

toki Pona is all about fun and creativity! Go out and create cool stuff. More vocaloid translations, especially.

Why are there so few words?

Because that's how Sonja Lang, the creator made it, and the community hasn't added many more. Coherent Toki pona requires a certain way of thinking about how you say things which is pretty fun and makes you reflect.

Even though there are so few words, can you really speak about anything significant in Toki Pona?

Yes, people have complex conversations in Toki Pona, both online and in person. People and non-peoples have translated complex works into Toki Pona.

Like what? Got proof?

I don't feel like finding the links. Go do the work yourself.

Isn't that few words kinda like Newspeak in George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984"?

No, it isn't. Not at all. Think about it.

This language has no practical usage, total waste of time.

That's not a question, fuckhead.

Well, fuck you!

Fuck you!

Oh wait, actual question, how do I supposedly express complex ideas that there are no words for in Toki Pona? Do I make add modifiers to nouns, creating compound words?

No, words with many modifiers are hard to understand. There is no canonical combination of words that mean "train" in Toki Pona. You could say all sorts of things. "tomo tawa", a moving building. "ilo pi tawa wawa", a fast tool. "linja tawa", a moving long thing.

But "tomo tawa" could be a car, or a plane! Checkmate, toki ponists!

Yes, that's the point. Unlike say, Mandarin Chinese, where "火车" is literally "fire car" but really only means "train", "tomo tawa" or "linja tawa" could be all sorts of things!! But you can use context to figure out what it means, just like in any language. When I said "bird" in english, often I don't need specify whether it is a Red-crested French Swan or a Stallman's Pigeon. It's clear in context. Same thing in Toki Pona. You can just say "waso", unless you have a reason you need to clarify further.

What about even more complicated concepts? How do I say "Set theory" in Toki Pona??

Describe it in a sentence or two. Or even a whole paragraph.

But. but. isn't that inconvenient?

Wah wah wah. No, you have to describe set theory to normal people using paragraphs too. And again, in most cases, explanations will be like a sentence or something.

Why are you so aggressive? Don't you want me to learn Toki Pona?

My bad. Sorry my friend. I got a little worked up.

So how should I learn Toki Pona?

Wasona is a fun and recent course. It doesn't teach some more niche nasins (nasin: way, method [in this case, of speaking toki pona]), but the nasin taught in Wasona is understood by nearly all Toki Ponists, except maybe the stranded folks in Telegram. Don't just learn using a dictionary, you won't get any of the grammar and no one will understand you.

While going through wasona (and after!), you can hop on various d*scords or the subr*ddit and practice there, people will be happy to teach and correct you.

I have a new word idea! Now what?

Oh, a "nimisin"! Toki ponists usually complain about new words, but if you are persistent enough, we believe you will succeed, do not listen to the naysayers. Keep using it, and answer as many surveys as possible, and eventually your word will be statistically notable.

I love you. mi olin e sina.

mi kin li olin e sina. Send marriage proposals to this email, we look forward to a beautiful life with you.

My love, can you teach me a little toki pona?

Yes, mi amor. "kijetesantakalu li moku e kasi, njan." means "the raccoon ate the plant". "kijetesantakalu" is raccoon, the subject, "li" marks the start of the verb, "moku" as a verb means "to eat" (as a noun/adjective, it means "food/food-related/eating/eating-related"), "e" marks the start of the direct object, which the verb is being applied to, "kasi" is plant. So the subject (raccoon) is verbing (eating) the direct object (plant). "njan" is what indicates the end of the sentence, by the way. Don't forget it. You're welcome.

What are tokipona.net and tokipona.org? Why so many websites?

tokipona.org is run by the founder and creator of Toki Pona, Sonja Lang. tokipona.net is run by the same people who run the ma pona pi toki pona d*scord server, or something like that, who knows. This is the best website, the other two are fine though. But again, this is the best one. Unironically, this looks better than the other .net. The othe other .net is pretty nice (ie, it doesn't look like an AI slop startup's home page), but where is the bravery?

Is this site satirical or meant to be funny?

Not really, no. This site really is the best toki pona site we've seen so far, that part is 100% true. toki ante li toki pi lon meso njan. o awen pana e pona tawa toki pona!
